Chinhoyi Municipality has embarked on the rehabilitation and resurfacing of major roads in the Central Business District. The project is expected to cost $500 000 and will see other main roads linking the CBD and residential areas being repaired.

Engineering Services Director, Engineer Simon Marara, said council was moving in to repair about eight kilometres of roads before the onset of the rains. Eng Marara revealed that funding for the roads had been sourced from the Zimbabwe National Road Authority, while some was internally generated.

“It’s a project that is basically meant to change the face of our town considering that the roads were in bad shape,” he said. “The project, which will see the local authority repair eight kilometres of the roads comes as a way of rehabilitating our roads and preserving the existing ones.

“We will be targeting CBD roads like Midway Avenue, Montrose, Megawatt Link, Park Street and North Drive. We will then move to major roads linking the suburbs to the CBD like Mwanga, Msasa, Hillside Chapel in Muzari and Nemakonde.”

Eng Marara added, “We have a limited budget, but I believe it will play an important role in changing the face of our town. The idea is to resurface all roads and continue to tar some of our roads. We have US$500 000 coming from Zinara and the council’s internally generated funds. The rehabilitation works will be done before the rainy season. After this initial plan, we will them map the forward.”

Residents welcomed the rehabilitation works by the council. “People are going to be celebrating,” said Mr Taona Rungavi. “We have been waiting for this for many years. At least we know that the council is doing something and we appreciate such efforts.”
