China yesterday donated wheelchairs, clothes and goodies worth $3 000 as a special Christmas gift to less privileged children of the Zimbabwe Parents of Handicapped Children Association (ZPHCA).

The donation, handed over to ZPHCA Harare provincial co-ordinator Mrs Theresa Makwarara by wife of Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Madame Liao Yuancui, at a Christmas party held for the children at the Chinese Embassy, consists of five wheelchairs, five commode chairs, clothes, food and some daily consumables.

Mrs Makwarara expressed appreciation for the kind gesture saying it would go a long way in assisting the children and their families.

“This donation will improve the quality of life of children with disabilities and their parents or caregivers.

“Your support and cooperation will forever bear a mark in our struggle for the empowerment of families and children with disabilities,” she said.

She said the donation would also be instrumental in the children’s development.

“This will improve and break the barriers; open new doors to an inclusive society,” said Mrs Makwarara.

Mrs Makwarara also underscored the need for participation in taking care of the handicapped by society at large.

“I would like to urge you all to take a leaf from the Chinese Embassy by also contributing and supporting the vision and mission of ZPHCA concerning the improvement of the livelihoods of children with disabilities,” Mrs Makwarara said.

She thanked the Chinese government for its contribution towards improving livelihoods of children with disabilities.

Speaking at the same occasion, Madam Liao Yuancui, said the donation was another demonstration of excellent relations existing between the two countries.

“As Zimbabwe’s all-weather partner, China has been persistently assisting Zimbabwe in the form of financial support, carrying out a series of livelihood projects, capacity building among others.

“In doing this, China sincerely hopes that our good bilateral relations would truly benefit the Zimbabwean people and our mutual understanding and friendship will be enhanced,” she said.

Madame Liao Yuancui hoped that 2015 would be of great significance for both Zimbabwe and China.
