ZANU-PF leadership has challenged Government and responsible authorities to recognise the Chikurubi Heroes Acre and accord it decent treatment. Chikurubi Heroes Acre has 67 graves of liberation war fighters who were executed by the Rhodesian government between 1973 and 1975. Speaking at the commemoration of the liberation heroes, Zanu-PF central committee member Cde Noah Mangondo said it was worrying that the shrine had not been maintained and accorded the respect it deserved.

“We have 61 graves of which 47 were identified. There could be more than 200 liberation war heroes here because there are mass graves here. Some graves have more than three people buried in them,” he said.

The heroes, Cde Mangondo said, were executed at the then Salisbury Central Prison and buried at Chikurubi.
“We are going to work hard and ensure the place is well kept so that the heroes are given the respect they deserve,” he said.

“The commemorations should be an annual event. Every time we remember heroes we should come here.”
Speaking at the same function, Harare metropolitan governor Cde Alfred Tome expressed concern that the party had been infiltrated by enemies.

“I am glad there are youths present here. We should invest in our children and teach them the history of the liberation struggle.
“I am concerned that sell outs have continued to infiltrate us. There was one Nyathi who caused the massacre of our sons and daughters and other Nyathis are rising. MDC- T should not have won in this constituency,” he complained.

Chikurubi Farm officer-in-charge Chief Superintendent Nobert Chomurenga said the Rhodesian government executed many liberation fighters that were captured at meetings and during the battles.

“In 1975, the executions were stopped and the Rhodesian government imported an incinerator from Germany to burn the liberation fighters to conceal evidence,” said Chief Supt Chomurenga.

“We failed to establish the exact number of those who were incinerated and those fighters who were buried here.”
The commemorations were also attended by Zanu-PF Harare provincial chairman Cde Amos Midzi who urged the community in Chikurubi to maintain the heroes acre and contribute towards the improvement of the area.

War veterans and collaborators, Zanu-PF supporters and members of the Zimbabwe Prison Service also attended the commemorations.
