Police officers should remain disciplined if they are to effectively combat crime, Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri said yesterday.

He said police work demanded physical ability complemented by an alert mental astuteness.

Comm-Gen Chihuri was speaking at the official opening of the 2015 Commissioner-General of Police’s Sports Gala in Harare.

“As an organisation, we will continue to support the participation of officers in sporting activities. It is our conviction that the participation in sport is fundamental to the overall physical, mental and spiritual development of our officers.

“Police officers are expected to out think, outrun and ultimately overwhelm the criminals in their machinations.

“The array of benefits of participation in sports can therefore not be overemphasised.

“As we are all aware, discipline is an important tenet in sport. Self-discipline moulds character,” he said.

He said it was important that the nobility of sport continued to be upheld within the force.

“It is regrettable that we have noticed with dismay, some participants and spectators that tend to soil the good name of sport through misguided and overzealous actions. Some of these misguided actions have involved violence with spectators and participants turning the sporting fields into arenas for brawling, scuffles and fights with all manner of weapons, both verbal and physical,” Comm-Gen Chihuri said.

Comm-Gen Chihuri applauded female officers who continued to demonstrate spectacular exploits both in professional and sporting domain.

He said the gala presented an occasion for reunion, interaction and exchange of experiences and sporting notes.

“This is presenting an added motivation to perform as excelling participants will be selected for the upcoming Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation [SARPCCO] Games. As you are all aware, the Zimbabwe Republic Police are the current holders of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation [SARPCCO] Trophy,” Comm-Gen Chihuri said.

At least 3 941 policemen drawn from the force’s 17 provinces are participating in the gala.

Of the 3 941, 2 413 are men while 1 528 are women.

The Officer Commanding Support Unit, Senior Assistant Commissioner Mekia Tanyanyiwa, said in addition to the 16 sporting disciplines, they had added swimming in order to promote a culture of saving life and curtail drowning, which has been on the increase countrywide.

“As the curtain comes down on Friday the 29th of April next week, marking the end of the games, we would have selected the actual crème de la crème to form your team for the SARPCCO Games, which is poised to write a piece of history for the SARPCCO Games for becoming the first team in living memory to make it four consecutive wins in a row,” he said.

In August 2013, Zimbabwe for the third time in a roll, won the SARPCCO Games.
