All is set for the Rooftop Promotions’ four-day play showcase that begins tonight at Alliance Frachaise where the much awaited Stephen Chifunyise play “The Past is For The Future” will premiere. The emotional play, which is a two-cast production featuring veteran actress Eunice Tava who doubles as director and Lisa Gutu (16), was written by Stephen Chifunyise after he was inspired by his love for the  industry.

The must-watch play is about a young girl who was dumped at an orphanage and grew up not knowing that her biological mother was in contact with the orphanage all the time. In an interview Stephen Chifunyise said the play has no central theme but revolves around emotions.

“This play has so many messages, the first is about learning to put the past behind and look to the future and build on it for the benefit of the future. Another is about the love of a mother as a never-dying one that builds a future from a sad past and yet another message is ‘It does not help to remain tied to a negative past when it is possible to turn one’s talent to generate a positive future from a sad past’,” he said.

The veteran play writer said the play has connotations for every theatre lover.

“The play is not only for the young lady who is kept in between the situation whether to be told the truth and implicate everyone involved or not, it is even for those who want to be forward minded and turn difficult past circumstances to creative benefits for the future. It is vital to our Zimbabwean film context where most of our great actors were giving up, it is time to put that behind and focus on the future,” he said.

In a statement Rooftop Promotions Producer Daves Guzha, who is the play’s production adviser, said engaging the veteran stage actress and the young performer is the best way to nature talent.

“Putting her (Lisa, Ruvarashe in the Character) with Eunice is a great idea as she will learn more from the veteran actress who has since grown to be a director. She has walked the same road to be where she is now hence she will impart so much knowledge to Lisa and help her settle and enjoy her chosen career,” he said.
