CHIBI were the winners of the third edition of the ZLG Sports tournament at Gutu High School on Monday. Chibi came out tops in the battle for honours in football and netball against schools such as hosts Gutu, Dewure, Hebron High School, Masvingo Christian, Mashoko and Nyamandi High School.

The school walked away with two trophies and $2 000 cash while Gutu were runners-up and received $1 000.

Pamushana High could not make it to the tournament as they had commitments elsewhere.

Chibi and Gutu beat other teams in the group stages to set up exciting finals in both soccer and netball.

But the hosts were no match in both disciplines while their coaches accused match officials of being biased.

Chibi won the football final 1-0.

Triumphant coach Ranganai Njodzi said there was need for Premiereship and Division One coaches and scouts to come and identify talent in such schools tournament.

The tournament officials resolved that a number of children have talent but they lack exposure hence coaches from different teams or the Premier League and Division One teams should find time to come for such events.

Chibi’s Emmanuel Magode was voted outstanding football player while Rimbidzai Mapfura stole the show in netball.

Chibi beat Gutu High after extra time, to win the netball tourney.

The match had ended 17-17 in regulation time

Zim U-18 for Craven week

ZIMBABWE Under-18 rugby coach Godwin Murambiwa said it was tough to come up with a squad for this year’s Craven Week, following the selection process at Falcon College recently.

Murambiwa now has a shortlist of 22 players he will work with for the schoolboys rugby tournament in South Africa in July.

Players from Falcon dominate the Craven Week squad after eight made the grade, while Prince Edward have three players.

“We are happy with the team. We selected a better team than last year but we have some of the players who are going back for the second time to the Craven Week.

Akim Sibanda, Argus Bruce, Tarisai Mapfumo and Campbell Nyakudya are the returning players.

“This year we had a structure we never had before, we made the provisional teams play each other instead of the schools.”

Murambiwa said they are still going to do a lot of training with the players.

Brian Mutanga, Stuart Dodington, Campbell Nyakudya, Ben Meridith, Sam Phiri and Jordan Zietsman will be coming from The Mad Dogs’ yard. Peterhouse, St John’s , Prince Edward and St George’s also contribute to the squad.

Prince Edward coach, Shaun De Souza, who was part of the selectors, said it was very tough to come up with players for the provisional squad.

He said the level at which schools are playing rugby now is outstanding and much credit goes to all the coaches. He wished good luck to Godwin. – The Herald.
