CHEGUTU Town Council has proposed to maintain its 2018 budget at $6 million to lessen the burden on the residents. Town chairperson Mr Leo Gwanzura said the local authority had decided to have a standstill budget as a viable option.

“We saw that people were struggling to pay their rates and it was going to be absurd for us to increase the rates next year,” he said. Mr Gwanzura said a reduction in the budget was also likely to burden the local authority as people would be reluctant to pay.

“To reduce the budget was also going to impact negatively on our inflows depending on how residents will pay, we just thought maintaining it where it was, was a noble idea since this year we have been trying to make ends meet with what we have,” he said. The town is currently rehabilitating its road network after the local authority got an allocation of $80 000 from the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara). Mr Gwanzura said the road rehabilitation exercise was going on well.

“We received $80 000 from Zinara and we have started resurfacing and patching potholes,” he said. Mr Gwanzura said the allocation from Zinara was timely as the town was battling to fund road rehabilitation programmes on its own. He said the city’s road network was extensively damaged by last year’s heavy rains, which saw Government declaring the country’s roads a national disaster.
