The Changamire Hip-Hop Festival that was held over the weekend at Book Cafe lived up to its billing as many hip-hop enthusiasts were left in awe.

The show, which attracted aspiring and inspiring musicians such as Teqniq from Mutare, Reflection Dance Crew, Briss Mbada, Tricky J, Pro Beats, Tysean and Huby Blacks amongst others ended on a high note after a huge turnout.

In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, founder and CEO of the Changamire Hip-hop Festival, Tafadzwa “Zimboy” Muchechetere, said the weekend fiesta was to focus on all hip-hop elements mainly rap, dance, deejaying and beat boxing.

“We are quite delighted with the success of the fifth Chimurenga Hip-Hop Festival as we gave a platform to a variety of talented artistes all over Zimbabwe and this month’s main act was from Bulawayo-based artiste POY and Mark Vhusani being our special guest of honour .

“Our line-up comprised many artistes from all over Zimbabwe with the likes of Teqniq from Mutare, Reflection Dance Crew, Briss Mbada, Tricky J, Pro Beats, Tysean and Huby Blacks amongst others performing” he said.

Muchechetere, who is also the Zimbabwe Hip-Hp Awards operations manager, added that the hosts for Saturday’s hip-hop festival comprised some of the most seasoned DJs and MCs in the mould of MC Potar and Shiela King who both got the crowd singing along to their classical hip- hop music selection. The festival was lit up by surprise hip-hop artiste Gee Tee from South Africa, who upped the game by showing his younger Zimbabwean artistes how to take care of business.

Furthermore, Muchechetere shed some light on the forces that have enabled the Chimurenga Hip-Hop Festival to strive in times of difficulties. “We have managed to run the Changamire Hip-hop Festival for five months now without any external sponsors, but we are being assisted by the Zimbabwe Hip-hop Awards chairman, Aldrian Harrison, who has helped us to achieve our goals both financially and morally.”

“We are quite confident Aldrian Harrison is going to keep on assisting us as he too wants to see this hip- hop festival going international,” he added. Despite the success of the festival, the Book Café almost torpedoed it by a clash with the Mashoko Spoken Word resulting in confusion as patrons were left unsure as to which event to attend.

Since its inception, the Changamire Hip-hop Festival has been held every last Saturday of the month with the first fiesta taking place at the Roof Top Travel Plaza early this year.
