Mama Betty, as she was affectionately called was 84. She died a month after celebrating her 66th marriage anniversary. She married Dr Kaunda in 1946; was Zambia’s First Lady from 1964 to 1991. The two had 10 children, 30 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Living a long life full of so many blessings is a remarkable feat.
However, Mama Betty remained a humble woman willing to serve her country in various capacities.
Then last Saturday, Prophetess Makanyara Chipunza (43) was also translated to glory in her sleep at the family’s Cotley Farm in Nyazura. She was the wife of Pastor Oliver Tarugaria Chipunza, founder and senior pastor of Apostolic Flame Ministries of Zimbabwe.
He death resulted in the cancellation of the weeklong Crusade this week “Winning the invisible battles”, which we featured on this column then Saturday she died.
The couple was married in 1990, and had six children. Prophetess Chipunza was trained as a pastor at Victory Bible College where she obtained a diploma in theology.
Pastor Chipunza on Thursday described their 22-year marriage as stable and that they were able to overcome any marital problems. He also said that his wife was a diligent, open-minded and loving person.
“She supported the ministry and was a builder of families apart from looking after her mother-in-law who is on a wheel chair. She has left a social welfare fund. Our church has lost its mother but to me death is the gateway to eternity and no one can run away from it,” said Pastor Chipunza soon after his wife’s death.
Mrs Regina Mutambara, her best friend for more than 20 years described Prophetess Chipunza as a courageous and hard-working woman who loved the Lord and her family.
Let us remember these women and others who have gone to be with the Lord through Pastor Shirley Caesar’s award winning song “I remember Mama”. Though she dedicated it to her mother, it is timeless since it speaks about the love that all mothers give. The lyrics are:
I remember Mama,
And the love that she gave
Kneeling by her bed side
I can still hear Mama say,
“The people are depending on you, Shirley,
Don’t you let them down”
I remember Mama in a happy way
We went to school with holes in our shoes
We didn’t have much but the Lord saw us through
Mama kept the family together
I remember Mama in a happy way
She packed our lunch in an old greasy bag
It might’ve seemed empty,
But it was more than others had
It had a lot of love way down deep inside and
I remember Mama in a happy way
Now Mama is sleeping in the bosom of Jesus Christ
Somehow I know she’s smiling, she’s smiling on us right now
One day I’ll see her again, how happy I will be
And I remember Mama in a happy way
My brothers and sisters, they’re living far apart
Although my Mama’s gone, she’s right here in our hearts
We’re all gonna pull together and stay in the holy place
I remember Mama in a happy way
I remember Mama, I remember Mama in a happy way!
