It is time for carols by candlelight once again. A tradition dating back centuries, this event is designed to gladden people’s hearts as they listen to traditional choral hymns. Two such functions are lined up over the next couple of weekends in Harare.

The Rotary Club of Harare in conjunction with Arundel Village Shopping Centre and several corporate sponsors are hosting their 60th annual Carols by Candlelight event this Friday at Arundel Village Shopping Centre in Mt Pleasant. The singing will start at six in the evening and attendance is free although the Rotarians welcome donations which will be forwarded to Chinyaradzo and Emerald Hill as well as other children’s homes.

The Arundel School Choir will be leading the Christmas hymns and carols and musical with the Air Force of Zimbabwe Brass band on hand with their usual thrilling performances.

The following weekend the Rotary Club of Highlands will have a jazzed up and Africanised version of Christmas carols presented by African Voice, the all-female a capella ensemble, and St George’s College boys whose line-up will be swelled up by the addition of some Old Georgians and guest choristers. The candlelit festive concert dubbed “Christmas in Africa” is produced and directed by Kundisai Mtero. In this concert, the singers will revisit and celebrate the birth of Jesus in song, music and narrative with an afrocentric flavour garnished with “Zimbo” satire! Entry is US$5 with refreshments on sale before the concert and at intervals.

There will be four shows, Friday and Saturday nights at seven in the evening as well as 2.30pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday. All events will be at St George’s College, Beit Hall.

In the spirit of Christmas which is epitomised by giving to the less fortunate guests are kindly being asked to bring an item of dry provisions for donation to various charities.
