Government has urged parliamentarians and the civic organisations to support the enactment of the Gender Commission Bill to promote gender equality, a senior Government official has said. Addressing female parliamentarians in Harare on Wednesday, Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Minister Oppah Muchinguri said the enactment of the Bill would be a milestone towards promotion of gender parity, which was crucial to the nation’s develop- ment.

“The Constitution contains an expensive bill of rights and very elaborate gender equality provision which make the best constitution in the region when it comes to women’s rights.

“The provision of the Bill already went through Cabinet and is now ready for presentation before Parliament,” she said.
She said there was need to continuously meet with female parliamentarians in order to implement gender policies as stated in the Constitution.
Minister Muchinguri said the provisions of the Constitution should not remain on paper, but should be implemented holistically.

Minister Muchinguri called on the Government to allocate more funds to support the commissioning of the Bill.
The Gender Commission will be put in place through an Act of Parliament anytime soon.
