PUBLIC Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Prisca Mupfumira has challenged business to improve safety standards to curb workplace-related accidents.

In a statement marking Workers’ Day, Minister Mupfumira said work-related deaths were a matter of deep concern to Government.

“As we celebrate Workers’ Day, we note with sadness the findings from the 2014 Labour Force and Child Labour Survey on those 280 415 workers who were injured at the workplace where 195 570 were male and 84 844 were female workers. In the same survey, 127 832 work-related illnesses were recorded,” she said.

“We urge both businesses and workers to take necessary precautions to avoid unwarranted accidents.”

This year’s celebrations were held under the theme “Workers in Unity for Industrial Harmony and Improved Productivity”.

Minister Mupfumira urged workers to remain resolute despite the sanctions-induced economic hardships.

“Government also calls for resilience as we face a plethora of challenges. The role we play in the global village we find ourselves in defines us as Zimbabweans and as long as we take advantage of our strength as a nation we will be able to compete with the outside world,” she said.

Minister Mupfumira said Government was working hard to revive the economy.

“In light of these challenges, the Government realised the need to come up with a strategy to turn around the economy.

“Zimbabwe has adopted Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset)) which aims at addressing the socio-economic challenges that the country is facing. Zim-Asset emancipates workers to participate and own the means of production,” she said.
