Co-operatives in Caledonia have formed a consortium to co-ordinate housing development and bring sanity in the area as well as flush out land barons who are selling and parcelling out State land.

Speaking during the launch of the Caledonia Eastville Housing Development Consortium, chairperson Mr Nelson Mandizvidza said no land would be sold in the area called Eastville without the approval of the consortium.

“This is a housing development and land service consortium, which was formed out of the need to co-ordinate development in a newly established suburb of Caledonia Eastville.

“The idea was mooted by 20 chairpersons to speed up co-ordinated development and not just haphazard development like in other areas. The 20 leaders took it upon themselves to carry out all requirements in the acquisition of the farm until the full servicing of the 30 000 residential stands is completed,” he said.

He said the consortium would provide security to all individuals who have been properly allocated stands against any threats of stand dispossession.

Mr Mandizvidza said the consortium was going to invest a large amount in its first month to stop all pending stand invasions.

“We know very well the people who are behind the invasions and we are prepared to deal with them in order to see that Caledonia stand developments are not affected by a handful of individuals.

“It is barbaric to derail the housing development, which is benefiting 30 000 beneficiaries, because we are failing to contain, control and prosecute about five individuals.

“We will work together as a team to make sure that land invasion is stopped immediately.

“We are appealing to all stand beneficiaries not to be divided by thugs who are using the name of the revolutionary party Zanu-PF in justifying their stand theft,” he said.

Mr Mandizvidza said the consortium was stopping all individuals who were advertising stands in the name of Eastville without the clearance of the consortium security.

He said those who advertised the area without being cleared would be prosecuted as they were fuelling illegal stand allocations in the area.

He said the consortium had a three-year development plan in which it was targeting to provide electricity, roads and other essential services in Caledonia.
