THRILLS and spills were the order of the day during Sunday’s third round of the 2015 Telecel Drag Racing Series at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare where Zimbabwean racer Allan Cacace did the country proud by relegating South African drag star Reg Murray to second position in the main event of the day. Cacace recorded a top speed of 10.4 seconds over the 1/4 mile to emerge as the top dog in front of a bumper crowd of more than 4 000 motorsport enthusiasts who thronged Donnybrook on Sunday to watch this exciting event.

Not to be outdone by Cacace was Leslie Carlsson who is now the new Superbike “speed king” after gracing the top podium place ahead of seasoned rider Phil “Archie” Archenoul.

Carlsson posted a best time of 10,3 seconds to win the bike section.

However, it was Mano Zevgolis who stole the show in the motor vehicle section, posting 10,5 seconds in a Toyota MR2 and he demonstrated true sportsmanship by allowing Cacace to take on Murray in the day’s decider.

A total of 82 vehicles and bikes entered the third edition of this year’s Drag racing series on Sunday and the more than 4 000 spectators also had the opportunity of watching the country’s top female motorcyclist Tiffany Fisher in action in the Superbikes section.

Fisher was in an uncompromising mood on Sunday, posting times sightly above 11 seconds and losing to eventual Superbike winner Carlsson (10,3 seconds) by a fraction of a second on the quarter mile (402m) straight. . .Not too bad for a 26-year-old lady biker.

In fact, Fisher’s performance on Sunday won the hearts of many motorsport fans including one Felix Kanoz who posted on his Facebook wall yesterday: “My favourite car racer from yesterday (Sunday), was Castrol MR2 (which was being driven by Zevgolis),and my favourite bike racer, the lady racer (Tiffany Fisher).

“She (is) hot, her bike bike even hotter and on the track she is the hottest… I salute you lady bike rider.”

Musekiwa Kumbula, the Innscor Group Corporate Affairs Executive, was among the spectators who thronged Donnybrook on Sunday and promised to return to the home of local motorsport to watch the fourth and final event of the drag racing series later this year.

“This was my first time to watch a drag racing competition and I didn’t know that it’s such a very exciting event. The crowd was very colourful too and I really enjoyed my day at Donnybrook today and I can’t wait to come back to watch the final round of this series,” Musekiwa said on Sunday.
