BRICS a new milestone: Russia

MOSCOW. — The summit of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) slated for July will yield more efficient methods to cope with modern global challenges, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said yesterday.

The BRICS summit to be held on July 8-9 in Ufa, capital of Russia’s Bashkortostan republic, will become “a new milestone” in its development and help deal with modern challenges in a more efficient way, Ryabkov told the 7th BRICS Academic Forum here.

Ryabkov stressed that BRICS countries have been united not only on economic affairs, but also on long-term security threats and challenges, including the space arms race and situation in the Middle East.

BRICS countries support Russia’s initiatives to ban the deployment of weapons in space, Ryabkov said.

“Within BRICS, our initiative is not only greeted by positive responses, but has also been embedded in the documents signed and approved practically by all BRICS members,” RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.

Ryabkov praised BRICS for its ability to remain a “super-modern-style” organisation which reflects a democratic mode of international relations.

“BRICS doesn’t impose anything on anyone and lacks the military dimension which is typical of military-political blocs,” he said.

Also at the forum, Konstantin Kosachyov, head of the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, warned that geopolitical rivals of BRICS would attempt to “artificially” stir up trouble among the bloc’s members. — Xinhua.
