South Africa’s greatest trumpeter Hugh Masekela is expected to headline the Harare Jazz Festival scheduled for September 13 at Belgravia Sports Club.
Masekela, who is not new to Zimbabwean audiences, will perform some of his old and new hits including his recent collaboration with superstar Oliver Mtukudzi called “Tapera”, one of Tuku’s hit songs taken off the album “Vhunze Moto”.

The song is likely to have the same impact as “Into Yami” a collaboration between Mtukudzi and Ringo Madlingozi which made waves a few years ago.

Bra Hugh, who turned 75 in April  this year, will be among the heavy hitters at the popular festival including the likes of Auntie Dorothy Masuku, Beritha Khumalo, Tanga WekwaSando, Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana,  and the Cool Crooners.

Nigerian Kunle Ayo returns to Harare for yet another dance with his fans and share the stage eith Richie Lopes, Kudzai Sevenzo, Jazz Invitation, Maylene Chenjerai, Bulawayo Kwela and Mokoomba.

Other names on the bill are Matthew Ngorima, Shingi Mangoma, Norman Masamba,  Patience Musa, Frank Mavhimira, Kudakwashe Mucheche, Macy and the Red, Silence Nqonqo Nhendere and Mbare Trio.

The presence of Bra Hugh at the festival will add spark to the festival.

During his recent visit in Harare, most of his fans wanted Bra Hugh to perform but he could not do so since he was around for business.

Bra Hugh started out way back in the 1940s, in the small town of Witbank.

Nurturing his dream, his inspiration came from the movie “Young Man With A Horn”.

He knew he wanted to blow the trumpet.

In 1954, at the age of 14, anti apartheid activist Archbishop Trevor Huddleston gave Masekela his first trumpet, which saw the beginning of a man, who was to become known worldwide as Bra Hugh.

So it would entertainment galore at the festival when Bra Hugh takes to the stage with his wind instrument to serenade music lovers.

Sam  Mataure, the organiser of the Harare Jazz Festival, said all is set for the annual fete.
