MANICALAND Province will soon get its share of the US$15 million and 12 million Euro funding availed for purposes of flashing out, drilling and repairing boreholes across the country, Minister for Environment, Water and Climate Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, has said.

Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central are the provinces that had missed out when the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme was rolled out several years ago.

In an interview on the sidelines of a ceremony to handover a Toyota Hilux truck, computers, generators and other items in Mutasa Rural District on Saturday, Cde Muchinguri-Kashiri said the programme had already started.

“Some provinces were given boreholes because they were dry while Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central were left out in the process.

“Upon realising that these provinces were lagging behind and had not been given anything under the WASH programmes it was decided that they too needed to enjoy the same benefits with the rest especially given the fact that there are a lot of boreholes in Manicaland that are not being used for various reasons.

“It was also noted that the boreholes were either dry because the water table had gone down or they were broken down.

“WASH then injected US$15million and 12 million Euros for the programme. So the money would be used to repair or flash out those boreholes,” she said.

Cde Muchinguri-Kashiri said vehicles and other necessities to spearhead the programme had already been bought.

She said identification of areas that need boreholes had also been completed.

“The money is there and everything is being put in place. This project is new in Manicaland. It was not there before though we have already started it,” she said.

WASH is a programme meant to improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene in rural areas.
