BMX rider Penias Tenthani will be competing in the elite division at the World Championships in Belgium next month for the first time in his career. The elite race is the highest level in the sport and the 19-year-old Zimbabwean said he is ready for the biggest challenge of his career.

Tenthani is a member of a 13-man squad that has been training at Old Georgians in Groombridge ahead of the World Championships.

The city of Antwerp will host the event between July 21 and 25.

“It is going to be a bit tough and its making me nervous,” said Tenthani.

“I have raced at elite levels before when I was in Europe, but at the World Championships there will be more competitors and it should be more intense.”

Tenthani will shape up for the mega event by taking part in a contest in Durban, South Africa, two weeks from now.

“Unfortunately for us in Africa there are few riders and there are not so many tracks either,” he said.

“This makes it difficult for us in preparations when it comes to getting ready for these big races. It is always a bit of a downside for us.”

Zimbabwe BMX team coach Taffie Mashingaidze says it’s going to be a big challenge.

“I will be working with him to make sure he is able to conquer the track because they ride on bigger jumps and that is a big challenge.

“The riders should also be doing more gym work to make sure they are fit enough for the bigger tracks,” Mashingaidze said.
