BLUE LIONS were crowned the 2017 Mabvuku Heroes Sports Gala’s soccer champions after they defeated Glory to Glory 2-1 in the final at Mabvuku Sports Centre last weekend.

The sports fiesta saw scores of young male and female athletes taking part in a number sporting disciplines including volleyball, netball, basketball and soccer.

Organised by the Bob Sports Festival in conjunction with Metro Peech Wholesalers, the event saw 20 soccer teams, 10 netball sides, eight volleyball clubs and eight basketball teams turning up.

To win the soccer title, Blue Lions eliminated Conatek 2-1 in the first semi-final while Glory to Glory won 5-4 on penalties in another semi-final against BGM after the match had ended 2-2 in regulation time. In the men’s basketball, Mabvuku Seniors beat Mabvuku Juniors 56-44 in the first semi-final as Expendables booked their place in the final by beating Legends 46-38 in the other semis.

Expendables was the only invited team from outside Mabvuku and Tafara but they managed to reach the finals of the round-robin gala. Tendai “T Buns” Zhakata, the Bob Sports Festival representative, said they were happy with this year’s Heroes Sports Gala as they were better organised and had an impressive turnout from the participants.

“We are happy for the whole Mabvuku community who supported us as we had three other supporting communities like Tafara, Ruwa and Caledonia.

“We got so much support from the community and our title sponsor Metro Peech Wholesalers who came on board during our time of need. We are grateful to Peter Mubi and Timu Brown who supported us. “Metro Peech managed to provide hampers, trophies, playing kits, prize monies and administrative costs which amounted to $5 000. “We hope to continue working with them in the next events. The idea was to bring the Mabvuku community together while remembering our national heroes at the same time. We also got support from local guys like Ronald Chiwanza, Kudzie Marudza, Bruce Mbada and Tally Bee among several others who offered entertainment.
