MUTARE City is reaping the fruits of the on-going Operation Restore Sanity campaign after it generated $9 420 from tickets issued to motorists for various offences under the programme.

The council’s public relations officer, Mr Spren Mutiwi told The Herald that 68 commuter omnibuses, 47 private vehicles, two buses and one heavy truck had been impounded, adding that council had started releasing some of the vehicles, after the owners paid fines for their offences.

“We have started releasing the impounded vehicles after payment of traffic fines of various offences,” he said.

“As of Wednesday morning, we had raised $9 420 through tickets issued for the various offences.

“Municipal police, working with security forces, also arrested 48 people, 33 of them for illegal vending, 14 for touting and one for money changing.

“The suspect for money changing was charged under the Exchange Control Act and all these people have since appeared at the Mutare magistrate’s court and were convicted.”

Operation Restore Sanity, which started on December 4, is a joint operation between security forces and municipal police.

“We are continuing with the operation,” said Mr Mutiwi.

“And as a local authority we are not fighting anyone, but we want order and sanity to prevail.
