The Welshman Ncube-led MDC and Tendai Biti’s MDC Renewal Team yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the two political parties to engage in talks for possible unity.
The two parties had the MoU signed by their respective secretary-generals, MDC’s Mrs Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga and MDC Renewal Team’s Mr Tendai Biti in Harare.

In a joint statement, Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga and Mr Biti said they had common values which led them to consider uniting.

“The two secretary-generals of the MDC and the MDC Renewal Team, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga and Tendai Biti with their negotiation teams respectively met today in Harare as mandated by their political parties and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to officially commence talks on reunification,” they said.

“The basis for the re-unification is based on the common history, bond and the origins of the Movement for Democratic Change as formed in 1999.

“The talks will be guided by the shared values and principles of the MDC, which include tolerance, the rule of law, peace, democracy, gender equality and a servant leadership.”

Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga and Mr Biti said their talks would continue to be part of the grand coalition talks and consultations in which the two parties had been involved in.

The MDC Renewal Team split from MDC-T following their disgruntlement with Mr Morgan Tsvangirai’s leadership skills and dismal performance in the 2013 harmonised elections.

The MDC, formerly led by Arthur Mutambara, split from Mr Tsvangirai’s MDC-T after they failed to agree on whether or not to participate in the 2005 senatorial elections.
