BEITBRIDGE Town Council has started installing additional solar-powered street lights around the Central Business District and in most crime hotspots of the town, an official has said.

Town secretary Mr Loud Ramakgapola said the project was in-line with the local authority’s master development plan.

He said they had embraced the use of renewable energy, which is abundant in the area.

“The contractor is already on site in the CBD and the road leading to the border post,” said Mr Ramakgapola. “We expect the project to be complete by end of January next year.

“This is a cost cutting measure on our part as the local authority since we will rely more on renewable energy and we have a lot of sunlight in this town even during winter and hence the need to be innovative.”

Mr Ramakgapola said they would also install more solar powered tower lights at business centres in the northern part of the town.

He said the town was developing rapidly and there was need to create a safe environment for both residents and visitors, through the provision of adequate lighting.

Mr Ramakgapola said incidents of people being robbed or mugged during the night were common in areas with poor public lighting.

“Since we accelerated the installation of public lighting facilities on our roads a few months ago, incidents of robberies or mugging have relatively gone down,” he said.

“In addition, we are working on repairing existing street lights, while adding more in several areas.”

Mr Ramakgapola appealed to residents to pay up their bills in time so that the local authority would remain viable.
