Richard Mathews.
A splinter administrative group, led by Harare businessman Fabion Mahembe, has emerged.
Mahembe confirmed the developments.
“We had 10 executive members and six of them resigned to force a special meeting.
“Among those who resigned is the vice-president Douglas Chitongo, Ian Trombus, competition secretary, and Carol Walker, the treasurer.
“There was a call for a special meeting after members were not happy with what was happening at the club. If we cannot form a quorum we have to go for a special meeting.
“This is his second term in office. We hold our annual meeting every September and he was elected into office last year,” said Mahembe.
Mahembe said they had to cancel a tournament last Saturday, which was already underway.
“This is killing the sport. There was a tournament running it was supposed to go on for two weeks but was cancelled last week.”
Yesterday the club did not open its doors because of the problems related to the membership. City Bowling Club is the country’s oldest bowling club having been established in 1925 and has been running well for the past years.
Some members of the club said Harare businessman and former Dynamos chairman, Ignatius Pamire, was behind the emergence of the faction that is challenging Mathews.
“Some people want to serve their interests ahead of the sport even when there are some guidelines which clearly states how one can assume office. One should spend at least two years sitting in the committee to be chosen to the highest post.
“We are hopeful that things will start to work and people will understand so that the sport and club can continue to run well,’ said the sources.
