LONDON. – Mesut Ozil’s agent has opened discussions with Barcelona over a sensational January transfer – and the Spanish soccer giants believe they can land their man for £17million. It emerged on Monday that the European giants are considering making a dramatic January transfer window move for the Arsenal star as an alternative to Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.

And reports in Spain yesterday suggest the German international’s agent, Erkut Sogut, has already held talks with Pep Segura, the Catalans’ general manager. According to Mundo Deportivo, a fee of €20m (£17m) will be enough for the Gunners to part with Ozil rather than allow him to leave on a free when his contract expires in the summer.

Barca are keen to sign him when the window reopens due to his Champions League eligibility, having only played in UEFA’s secondary competition with Arsenal. The Barca board are divided as to what to do when the window opens at the end of the year. Technical secretary Robert Fernandez wants the club to see through the signing of Coutinho that was started but not completed last summer.

But Segura, who is now senior to Fernandez, wants to look at other options and Ozil’s contract situation has made him the No. 1 alternative.

The German’s performance against Tottenham at the weekend was given wide coverage in the Catalan press on Monday with much made of the fact that he could play for Barcelona in the Champions League. – Mailonline.
