In a statement yesterday, the ministry said it was concerned about bakeries that were baking bread that did not comply with the statutory mass under the Trade Measures Act.
The approved mass of half a loaf of bread is 350 grammes, while a full loaf should weigh 700g. “The ministry would like to warn all bakeries and retail outlets selling bread short of the quantities required of the seller to immediately desist from this practice or risk prosecution,” reads the statement.

The ministry’s trade measures inspectors are on the ground monitoring the situation.
The ministry appealed to consumers to report any cases of underweight bread to the trade measures section at their offices in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare and Masvingo.
