JOHANNESBURG. — Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba was named new Bafana Bafana coach on Saturday, taking over from Gordon Igesund, who was released after failing to fulfil several mandates.Mashaba’s appointment brings to an end weeks of speculation and debate on who will take over the South African senior national soccer team’s job.

Announcing the appointment of Mashaba at a packed media conference on Saturday, SA Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan said the entire National Executive Committee (NEC) was confident of a new era under Mashaba’s reign.

Jordaan said the Association had received up to 18 applications from around the world.

The list was then whittled down to two – Mashaba and former Iran coach Carlos Queiroz – by a technical committee.

“He has a proven record, is a hard worker and he fulfilled all requirements we were looking for to drive our senior national team back to where we all believe they belong — at the top,” said Dr Jordaan. — Supersport.com
