Killer T gives fans a rare treat at Spaceman Bar in Glen Norah

It was not a good weekend for musicians who performed in the capital. They staged shows at various venues but the results were not encouraging. Fans did not turn up as expected.

Maybe it was because many parents had spent a lot as they sent their children back to school at the beginning of the week. And, if the musicians also wanted to recover from the financial slump caused by the back-to-school bug, they were disappointed.

Among various shows held in Harare on Friday, Jah Prayzah – as has become the norm – had the largest crowd than his counterparts. However, the crowd was below the expected attendance. He is the man of the moment and many expected him to fill New Life Nightclub in Budiriro to capacity but that was not to be.

Yes, it was a large crowd as compared to other shows but it was below expectations. He has the pulling power these days and he could have attracted a bigger crowd on any other weekend.

He was performing at his first base and Budiriro is more of his homeground. He started his professional career in Budiriro and most of his shows in the suburb register full-houses. It was just a bad weekend but the musician was at his best as usual.

He did old and new songs that excited the crowd. He also sampled upcoming songs that he called “2016 productions”.

An upcoming song titled “Zvavo” was a good teaser. It shows the musician still has a lot up his sleeve. The choreography for the song was out of this world. The band members grabbed everything they could get on stage and it was an insane moment. Some grabbed guitar cases, others took pieces of stage carpet and Jah Prayzah hoisted a keyboard stand.

It was an insane moment that showed creativity. They did their choreography in an unexpected artistic way.

The other hits from Jah Prayzah excited the audiences as usual. He did his best in his home-ground and people liked the show. The venue could have been full to capacity had it not been a bad weekend for showbiz in Harare.

Peter Moyo also felt the impact of the bad weekend at his show at Dandaro Inn. For someone who has released a new album that is gradually penetrating the market, the Dandaro Inn crowd was below expectations.

Peter had his ammunition in place but the attendance was below his standard. He could have done better. On a mission to take the album to a higher level, Peter found himself in front of a handful of fans.

They danced the night away and Peter did the songs with passion but the mood could have been better if the show was well attended.

He performed old and new songs. He tried his best to market the songs from the new album and his stars on stage were in good form. The likes of Shiga Shiga, Yamatele and Spencer took turns to excite the crowd. But the gate-takings could have been better for the Kwekwe-based musician.

Nicholas Zakaria had his show at Palace Nightclub in Glen Norah B. The attendance was not encouraging at all. The musician, who now calls himself “The Senior Professor” did not have many people to lecture to.

Although he is not pulling big crowds anymore, Zakaria had timed his show well. He rarely stages shows in the capital these days and his return could have attracted a commendable crowd. But the fans were just too few to inspire a good act. He just performed to fulfil his mandate but the show did not excite him.

Then there was Leonard Zhakata at Radost at Long Cheng Plaza. The musician ended his show earlier than scheduled because of low attendance. Nothing could have inspired him to continue to daybreak like he usually does.

He performed most of his hits to his few appreciators and he called it quits when he felt he had done enough for those present.

After a night of club-hopping, this writer could not find a place with the usual Harare merrymaking spirit. The spirit that engulfed Harare recently when many local events were packed to capacity on a weekend that also saw foreigners Davido, Toni Braxton and Babyface performing was gone. Last weekend’s shows told a different story altogether .
