The much-hyped inaugural Miss United Nations Zimbabwe will not go according to initial plans.
National director Josey Mahachi said due to limited time, they have cancelled the national pageant and will only hold interviews to select country representatives.

This is ahead of the world finals slated for Kingston, Jamaica from July 12-19 this year.

“The entire team has been working tirelessly since we obtained the licence a few weeks ago. We are in the process of raising funds and forging partnerships but the rate at which we are going is slow,” said Mahachi.

“We sat down as a team and agreed it was better to channel resources towards the world finals and minimise on the selection process. We will do our best to ensure the interviews are befitting so that we select the best candidate,” she said.

She said the country would have two representatives, a Miss United Nations who will be chosen and a Miss Tourism World candidate who is reigning Miss Carnival Gamuchirayi Kujeke.

On the decision to rope in Kujeke, Mahachi said they had considered her experience in working closely with national tourism body Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

“We are not taking anything away from the traditional selection process. Remember the thrust of the UN pageants’ ultimate qualities are centred towards beauty, intelligence and charity. We will see to it that our representatives will have these qualities together with the internationally recognised standards,” she said.

Mahachi said they were already making preparations for the interviews with May 1 set as the day for the official launch of the Miss United Nations Zimbabwe.

She said the interviewees will be drawn from different provinces in the country with those in the Diaspora being legible to take part as well.

“Of course like any nation we want to be represented by the best possible candidate. We are currently engaging judges to look  for a person who is well versed on developmental issues about the nation. She is supposed to have a keen interest in positively impacting the society and also charity work,” she said
