Bad luck spawns war

A Harare man was yesterday brought to court by his wife after beating her for causing him bad luck which he said led to his loss of employment when they got married. Johanna Nyamukasira applied for a protection order against her estranged husband Simon Murungu. Nyamukasira told the court that Murungu turned her into a punching bag accusing her of making him fail to make money after marrying her.
“He chased me out of our matrimonial home at midnight and my parents took me back. I have now found my own accommodation in Kuwadzana but Murungu always comes to harass me there demanding back his lobola,” she said.

The court heard that Murungu damaged a door at his wife’s lodgings leading to the landlord giving Nyamukasira notice to vacate the place. Nyamukasira emphasised that she wanted the court to bar Murungu from visiting her new place of residence. In his response Murungu confirmed that he indeed lost his job after marrying Nyamukasira.

“She was the breadwinner for the family but told me that she cannot continue staying with a jobless husband. I cannot believe that my wife told me that another man is waiting to marry her,” he said.

Murungu told the court that he sold all his property to fend for the family but moved to his parents’ house as things worsened.
“My wife told me that the house didn’t match her standards and she opted to move out. I started selling potatoes to please her but this, too, was shameful for her,” he said.

Magistrate Ms Olivia Mariga granted the protection order in Nyamukasira’s favour but advised Murungu to visit her amicably.
