The Zimbabwe Defence Forces have a crucial role to play in the socio-economic development of the country, a senior army officer has said. Chief of Staff (Administration) Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba last week said it should not be business as usual in the ZDF owing to numerous tasks that need to be undertaken by the army to help the nation fulfil Zim-Asset goals.

Addressing senior ZNA officers at the closure of a one-week risk and result management seminar here, Maj-Gen Nyikayaramba hailed the role played by the army in implementing Zim-Asset, especially in areas such as housing and infrastructure development.

He said besides promoting increased inflows of revenue into the fiscus through border control operations, the ZDF had constructed over 50 schools and clinics mainly for rural communities.

“As the military we are expected to play our part in the implementation of ZimAsset and there are many examples I can give on the ZNA implementation of this programme,” said Maj-Gen Nyikayaramba.

“Senior army officers should know that it is no longer business as usual. The thrust of the Government is now centred on performance and results and the resources which are entrusted to us by Government must be utilised to bring the necessary results.’’

Maj-Gen Nyikayaramba said as part of improving access to housing in line with Zim-Asset, the ZDF through the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Welfare Benefit Fund had already completed construction of about 4 000 houses for its personnel.
