Apama dance group and Syndicate Girls won big at the recently held Dancers Association of Zimbabwe Awards ceremony bagging four awards each. Beverly Sibanda, aka Bev who was also among the nominees, scooped two awards – one for the Best Dance Group of the Year and another for her song “Tapinda” which was voted Best Song of the Year. The Best Pole Dancer went to Freaky Barbie Dolls, while Apama retained the Most Innovative Group Award which they won last year.

Unique Queens scooped the Best Dance Group while Video of the Year was won by Gudo for his song “Zora Mafuta”.

In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, DAZ organising secretary Louis Maenzanise said the initiative which started last year was meant to recognise dancers who are looked down upon in the entertainment industry.

“Our main aim is to build the girl child and the boy child, we want to support them and appreciate what they are doing in the industry like other artistes,” he said.

Commenting on the issue of controversy that has rocked Zimbabwean awards ceremonies, Maenzanise said local awards need fine tuning.

“When organising such events it is difficult to please everyone.

“We received complaints from other dancers who felt that those who were nominated and won did not deserve the awards but we tried our best to consult people who work with the dancers including promoters,” he said.

Last year, Bev picked the Best Dance Award of the Year while Coco scooped the Promising Pole Dancer award.
