The high-density suburb of Dzivarasekwa seems set to produce a new sungura star in the name of Gift Makuni, who has recently released his third album in as many years.

The neighbourhood is well known for producing sungura maestros like legendary Somandla Ndebele and the now defunct R&K African Sounds of the “Hawairevesa Tina” fame.

Titled ‘‘Zvivimbiso’’, the six-track album is already making airwaves on Radio Zimbabwe as sungura fans keep on requesting a number of tracks from his latest offering particularly “Hama Yemwana” and “Muchandiwana”.

In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, the 37-year-old Makuni said he is quite pleased with the positive response he has been receiving for his efforts.

“Just three weeks after releasing the album the response is overwhelming. It really makes me and my Tsemura Tiende Express band wonder how far we are going with this kind of positive reaction from our fans.

“Early last year, we managed to unleash our second album titled ‘Kuenda Kuenda’ and it got a similar response to the current album.

‘‘We are really excited by this development and I guarantee you that we are confident we are heading in the right direction,” he said.

Furthermore, Makuni said, the band has managed to tour the better part of Mt Hampden in a bid to promote their new album.

He said people from the area kept on requesting for them to return for more shows as they felt a new sungura vibe from Makuni and his band.

“Mt Hampden has become our second home since our first tour of the area last year although we are gaining ground at Marirangwe in Mhondoro as more offers continue to pour our way.

“Our music is not just for pleasure, but we are trying to tell people our message in matters concerning different families in difficult situations.

We cannot go on top of the mountain and shout our message therefore the need to record and spread our message to reach the people,” he said.

Makuni and his Tsemura Tiende Express band have shared the stage with a number of established sungura musicians like Josphat and the late Daiton Somanje.
