Expectations are high today when five of Harare’s top keyboard players meet for a performance at the inaugural Big Solo Jam at Book Café. The event which starts in the afternoon will see Filbert Marova, Owen Chimuka, Nick Nare, Jairos Hamba Hamba and Nigel Nyangombe performing one after the other in a showcase promising soul and technical brilliance.

Some of these keyboard players have shared the stage with the likes of Louis Mhlanga, Hugh Masekela, the late Dumisani Ngulube, Patience Musa, Diana Samukange, Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave and Chirikure Chirikure to mention but a few.

In a rare showdown the audiences will meet solo keyboardists as they show off their art and mastery of the instrument.

Event organiser Richard Kohola said solo performance was an art that demonstrates one’s ability to wow the crowds using his or her skills techniques and generally stage presence without the limitations of other band members.

“Usually we are used to enjoying musical performances in a band format where all musicians co-operate and follow a certain arrangement which at times does not fully give individual talent room to play their heart out,” said Kohola.

He urged music lovers to come and sample the rare music dish which will raise the appreciation of the significance of the different individuals that are in a band.

While the Big Solo Jam takes place, an array of top keyboards will be on display.

“While there is a lot of musical talent in Zimbabwe today it is important to create platforms such as this one to recognise appreciate and celebrate it.

“A lot of great instrumentalists have come and gone and their story is long forgotten and so as we showcase these individuals we hope to write their names in the Zimbabwe hall of fame for their contribution to the music industry,” he said.

Though the focus is on the keyboard players some of them will be accompanied by either a drummer or a bassist of their choice.

“Initiatives’ such as the big solo jam have the potential to inspire and promote musicianship and professionalism as this gives individuals something to look forward to,” he said.
