Afrika Revenge reunion not for good

One half of the now defunct Afrika Revenge, Willis Wataffi has ruled out the reunion of the famous band despite performing together at the City Sports Centre over the weekend.“Our performance together after some years was enjoyed by many people but let it be clear that Afrika Revenge is not back for good but just for a season.

“Since I was performing here and Taz was around I thought it was great for us to perform together. We are uniting only for the ZIMA because the organisers requested a performance from us otherwise after that it is over and will continue with our solo projects,” he said.

“As for our fans, they should know it is only the two of us who will decide whether to reunite or not, they should accept that Afrika Revenge no longer exists because we both want to expand our solo careers,” he said.

The duo that separated in 2006 entered the music scene with their debut album “Afrika Revenge Presents Qaya Musik”.

Six years later the duo shared the stage with Senegalese legend Ismael Lo during the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa).

At the height of their fame, the duo featured on some of the late Prince Tendai’s hits including “Zimbolicious” and “Naked Fire”.

Afrika Revenge won Song of the Year for “Wanga”, Best Male Artiste, Best Jazz Album, and Best Newcomer at the Zimbabwe Music Awards in 2004.

It also won the Outstanding Album Award for their debut album Afrika Revenge Presents Qaya Musik at the National Arts Merit Awards in 2005.

Separately, the two artistes have only enjoyed lukewarm success and neither has ever managed to individually surmount the heights they scaled as a duo.

But who knows, perhaps the ZIMA will help the two realise that they really do need each other and the Zimbabwean music scene will be enriched by their reunion.
