A play with no rehearsal at Reps Theatre

Many theatre actors are accustomed to being given the script, fall in love with it and remove their characters and put on what the script wants, but this was not the case at Reps Theatre over the past four days. With no rehearsal, no director, a different actor each night, and a script waiting in a sealed envelope on stage where taken into a journey of transformative power of theatre as performers such as Kevin Hanssen. Musa Saruro Kyla Render, Chipo Chikara and Jamie McLaren took turns to entertain the audience while performing the internationally acclaimed “White Rabbit, Red Rabbit” by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour.

Describing the experience, Reps Theatre manager PJ Smith said, “This is one play which is full of suspense, no one is allowed to talk about the contents of the play. What adds to its intrigue is that an actor is only allowed to perform the play only once in his lifetime,” he said. Smith said he was pleased with the turnout during the performances.

The play White Rabbit Red Rabbit has been performed around the world and translated into 25 languages since 2011. Every time White Rabbit Red Rabbit was staged, Soleimanpour request that a front row seat be reserved for and it remains empty each time. The Iranian playwright could not get a passport because he refused to do national service. So he devised a play that could travel the world without him. Not only could it take flight without its writer, it also needed no director and Soleimanpour specified that a different actor should perform it every night and should not see the script before stepping onto the stage.
