More than 65 people escaped unhurt when a Proliner bus they were travelling in from South Africa to Harare caught fire near Featherstone along the Harare-Masvingo Road.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm the accident happened on the 101km peg along Harare-Masvingo Road and no casualties were reported,” she said.

She said the fire broke out from the rear end of the bus due to wheel binding.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the driver noticed the fire and managed to get everyone off the bus safely.

According to Proliner agent Mr Lloyd Jiri, most goods were carried out of the bus before the fire spread.

“All the people managed to escape unhurt and we are yet to establish the total value of some of the property that was destroyed,” he said.

The accident occurred around 7:30am yesterday.

This is the second incident this year where a public passenger bus caught fire.

Recently, a Zupco bus ferrying Regina Mundi pupils also caught fire in May. There were no deaths or injuries.
