Nearly 6 000 serious crimes have been recorded in the Harare central business district in the first three months of this year.

Officer Commanding Harare province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Shadreck Mubaiwa, said in an interview that there was a slight decrease in crimes this year compared to the same period last year.

“In summary, the grand total of cases received from January to March 2014 were 5 941, while during the same period this year the district received a total of 5 832 cases, reflecting a slight decrease of 109 cases, translating to two percent,” he said.

Snr Asst Comm Mubaiwa said unlawful entry into premises cases were 179 compared to 140 cases last year, translating to a 28 percent increase. He said fraud cases had decreased by 35 percent this year, with 634 cases reported compared to 976 cases last year.

“Theft from motor vehicles from January to March 2014 totalled 335 and in 2015 (during the same period) totalled 263,” said Snr Asst Comm Mubaiwa.

“Theft of motor vehicle cases from January to March 2014 totalled 16 and in 2015 totalled nine, reflecting a decrease of seven cases, translating to 44 percent decrease.”

Snr Asst Comm Mubaiwa said plain robbery cases decreased by three percent this year, with 285 cases being reported compared to 295 cases during the same period last year. He said there had also been a 54 percent decrease in armed robbery cases this year, with six cases having been reported compared to 13 cases last year. Snr Asst Comm Mubaiwa warned criminals that the long arm of the law would soon catch up with them.
