At least 400 tourists will participate in this year’s edition of the Tour de Tuli tourism expedition that will be held between 13 and 18 August. The event is held in the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA), which is made up of Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Tour de Tuli Mapungubwe is a mountain bike event whose route traverses through the Greater Mapungubwe mega-park.

The event is being held for the 11th year running. Authorities from the three countries are jointly coordinating the event.

Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson, Ms Caroline Washaya-Moyo, said preparations were now at an advanced stage. “We have had several preparatory meetings with various stakeholders and we are happy with the work on the ground so far.

“We have agreed that the tourists spend two nights in Zimbabwe as usual and also agreed on a route they will use,” she said.

Ms Washaya-Moyo said mountain biking and safari expedition was meant to market the Greater Mapungubwe TFCA as the best tourism destination in Southern Africa.

She said the cyclists pass through three countries during the course of the event.

“Among the tourists are cyclists, journalists, business people and community leaders from over 15 countries including Argentina, Australia, Botswana, Britain, Germany, Greece, Brazil, South Africa, Netherlands, New-Zealand and Ireland among others,” she said.

She said a total of 300 tourists took part in last year’s event and they were happy that the number was rising this year.
