4 in court over poached ivory

Prosper Dembedza Court Reporter
FOUR men yesterday appeared in court after they were intercepted at the Harare International Airport in possession of 43 pieces of unregistered or unmarked elephant tusks destined for Singapore. Kudakwashe Kanodira (35), Kenny Zita (42), Andrew Marowa and Mahommed Gijero were charged with unlawful possession of unregistered or unmarked ivory when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo.

They will be back in court on November 9. Allegations are that Kanodira and Zita were found in possession of four trunks with 43 pieces of ivory which they wanted to export through Civil Aviation Ground Services at Harare International Airport.

The court heard that it was discovered at the scanner that the four locked trunks, which purportedly contained foodstuffs and personal effects, actually contained 43 pieces of unmarked ivory. It is alleged that investigations through interviews with the two implicated Marowa and Gijero who were also at the airport communicating using their mobile phones.
