IT will be hive of activity today at the HICC when more than 200 fighters from Southern Africa battle it out in the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five championships.

The competition will see athletes from Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and hosts Zimbabwe fight for honours from junior to the senior level in kata and kumite.

Zimbabwe Karate Union technical director Paul Danisa said they are looking forward to the competition despite facing challenges in their build-up due to financial constraints that saw them failing to bring the team together for their final preparations.

The hosts have to brace for tough competition from Botswana and South Africa, who are ranked among the best in the region.

“The toughest competition is from Botswana, they are good. They have just come from the Australia Open, where they were preparing. But I think we can hold our own, we will hold our own.”
