A MUTARE man has been sentenced to 12 years in jail for raping a 20-year-old mentally challenged woman. Regional magistrate Mrs Loice Mukunyadze jailed Conrad Kaswa following a full trial. She sentenced Kaswa to 16 years in prison but suspended four years on condition he does not a commit a similar offence. Mr Malvern Musarurwa prosecuted.

The court heard that on January 2, 2017, the victim and other villagers went to work for Kaswa. “Around 4pm, the woman approached Kaswa and asked for her money but Kaswa told her that he did not have any money at the time.

Kaswa followed her on her way home, dragged and pinned her to the ground before removing her clothes and raped her once,” said Mr Musarurwa. The victim alerted a relative about the abuse.

“At around 4:30pm the woman got home crying and told her aunt, Shaina Chishindi (73) of Mambwere village under Chief Zimunya, about the incident. Since Chishindi was unable to walk, they waited for her niece who worked in Mutasa to come and accompany her to the police. She was too terrified to walk alone.”
